Traveling Shoes

I'm in the mood to travel. Perhaps it's all the tweets and flickrs from Austin that did it to me. All those cool people all together experiencing art that makes me want to shake the rain off my jacket and head south.

We will be heading South in a couple weeks. To California to see the grandparents. Don't get me wrong, I'm so excited to see them and get a dose of sunshine.

But I need a dose of new. Going to a place I've never been before. With maybe just my hubby. Or just me. The only place I've ever been by myself was to a theater competition in Long Beach when I was in college. And once to Chicago, but I don't count it because I went to see a boyfriend, and we did what he wanted to do.

In case you're counting, this was all three lifetimes ago.

This is all just wishful thinking because it's not in the budget to take a trip, and logistically it's pretty improbable, what with the kid and the job, etc. And I know if I went somewhere by myself, to a place where I didn't know anyone, I'd get lonesome in about 5 seconds.

But it's those 5 seconds I'd like to experience right about now.

Maybe Charley could meet me there later.

Sparkle shoes! What a happy photo.

And I gotcha; solo travel can get lonely, but I'm big believer that a little lonely is good for the soul (ditto boredom). And if you would ever travel to say, New York City, maybe you could even meet up with some cute nerdy girl (like me) for a cup of coffee and a long, long talk, and a lot of very loud laughter, before you go off and lose yourself in the streets.

Yes, I know what you mean. It's hard to remember what it's like to just be responsible for your own needs and no one else's. You need an adventure. Maybe just getting on a train for one night and going somewhere...? Ashland? Or getting in the car and driving somewhere for one night.

Or even one day totally unplanned, alone. A movie. Lunch. A long walk. No cell phone. Another movie.

We all need a break.

Captain Picard says, "Make it so." The unplanned day alone is a good idea. Or come on down. There's still the whole music portion of SXSW. T and I will do our best to make you laugh and spit out your sandwich.

kari: If we make it to New York, I promise a visit with you! ps -- have you met my friend Robin?

Robin: Good advice, although an unplanned day means I usually wind up "catching up". I'd have to be far enough away from my house to actually have it work properly. But you got me thinking!

Amber: I don't remember the computer OR the shampoo! But I do remember calling my sister to apologize for stuff I did when I stayed with them when I was 19! I love you, darlin'! It's all part of growing up, and I was so glad we could be there for you.

Rodius: I used to have such a thing for Jean Luc Picard! Make it so is such a great catchphrase.

I love getting away on my own. Its happenned rarely - each time I recertify for Hospice/Palliative nursing I have to take an exam on the Mainland (SQUEE!!!) and I get a few days just for me (after the dreaded exam is over.) Last time I went to Oakland...which was lovely by day, and somewhat daunting by about 3pm...but I did get to see Burkley etc. Lots of fun.

Well, you *always* have a place to stay in our neck of the woods. I hope you get to Texas! :)
