They Totally Missed The Boat

Of course, it doesn't matter. I originally thought I'd search out the statistics of who buys Victoria's Secret, who are they marketing to? I couldn't find it within a couple Google pages, but I did run across this article from Business Week about their brand marketing manager. He manages to fill the article with lots of marketing talk, but I couldn't get past this one sentence: "I cannot imagine a better position coming out of business school. And let's be honest, working in an office filled with pictures of supermodels definitely has its benefits."

I'd be interested to know if he is a) married, and b) has daughters.

Here's the link to the article. I'd love to know what you think.

In the meantime, I will tell you my favorite part of watching these commercials is when my husband does the models voices. It's hysterical. I married the right man. He's sexy and funny and loves my body as much (and at times, more) than I do.

Okay...ummmmm I didn't see my body in the seven options. I wonder if they missed mine and the millions of other bodies that don't fit into their categorical boxes....

I'm sorry, weren't those pretty much ALL the same body? Glad he has several times a week to go out for an hour-long lunch and thinks it's important to one's well being. Hope he feels the same way about his secretary's well being...

I saw this article online a couple of days ago, and your post is the perfect place to call attention to it:

It seems only 17 year old girls with implants could possibly look like the Victoria's Secret models. For the rest of the women in the world, the commerical above is more realistic.

Wow, whether the Lane Bryant thing is true or not, I think it's fascinating. Thanks Anne & D for the links. That is such a great ad campaign!

hey there -- posted in a hurry and missed Anne's comment on the very same video.

as I mentioned in my email I can vouch for the authenticity of the Lane Bryant video -- they're a client of ours.

I just read the BusinessWeek article, and here is how the author describes the VS customer base:

"...from the 20-year-old college student who adores our PINK line, to the 30-year-old mom who buys VS clothes online, to the empty nester who seeks Victoria's Secret to complement her young and sophisticated personality."

I do not fit any of those descriptions, which is why their ads / merchandise no longer appeal to me.

I have to confess, however, that before I had kids, there was a VS bra that I loved. It fit my body (at the time) very well - I owned it in every color they offered.

Since kids and aging have changed my body shape, they no longer offer anything that fits my current body.
