What Would You Do?

If your child was sent home from school with chickenpox on Friday, would you send him back to school on Monday? Would you yell at the teacher and the principal and refuse to take your child - your sick child who is miserable and covered in spots - home?

I know I wouldn't.

Crazy!! Both my kids have had the pox and I kept them as far away from anyone else as possible the whole time.

sigh.

It is instances like these where I find it very hard to maintain my social worker credo of respecting the inherent dignity and worth of each human being and not judging or condemning.

Because, really, don't you just want to shake parents like that?

Yes, I do, Tracey. It's safe to say those parents are pretty lucky they didn't talk to me, the lowly staff assistant. I would have torn them a new one.

I might do that if I was at the end of my rope. if money was tight and there was no where else to send my child and I could lose my job if I had to take a day off. I just might.....especially if emotionally I was at my limit.

my mom was often in that position

I think she was probably mortified after but didn't even have the strength or energy to worry about it. just to hope for the best the next time. In fact, now I think she's blocked any such explosive situations from her memory.

I on the other hand, learned to be quiet about my miserableness and just try and breathe through it. It's actually a pretty good skill on certain occasions.

Have not learned to let go of all the anger yet (I have a crystal clear memory), but I'm getting there ;)

When my kids had chicken pox? I was such a good mother that I got them at 36 years of age, too, and we all stayed home.

(Hope you don't mind the comment. I was re-reading Lolabola's post today, and thought I'd browse...)
